“Viele Pianisten sind hier schon gescheitert, nicht so Mantovani. Er trifft den leidenschaftlichen Ton genau, ohne sich ausschließlich in Lautstärke auszutoben. Die ausdrucksstarke und so beredte Stille wie auch jene besonders leisen Passagen vermag er überaus ergreifend zu gestalten, was später besonders dem ungewöhnlicherweise am Ende stehenden langsamen Satz zu Gute kommt. [...] Mantovani setzt seine pianistischen Fertigkeiten geradezu perfekt ein und versteht es ausgezeichnet, musikalisch vom einen zum anderen Charakter zu wechseln. Eine ausgefeilte Technik in der Agogik und vor allem bei den dynamischen Veränderungen sowie die hohe Kunst, dem Instrument die unterschiedlichsten Klangfarben zu entlocken überzeugen bei dieser Interpretation. Auch in den Davidsbündlertänzen erweist sich der Pianist als nachfühlender und sehr geschickt vorgehender Gestalter, der Schumann nicht nur verinnerlicht, sondern wirklich verstanden hat. Auch diese Einspielung ist absolut zu empfehlen und den interessierten Schumannianern ans Herz zu legen, selbst – oder gerade ganz besonders – wenn man die beiden Klavierwerke schon häufig gehört hat. ” - Irmgard Knechtges-Obrecht
Many pianists have failed here (Schumann’s Fantasie op.17), but not Mantovani. He strikes just the right passionate note without resorting to excessive volume. He renders the expressive and eloquent silences as well as the particularly quiet passages in a deeply moving way, which later proves particularly beneficial to the slow movement, unusually positioned at the end.
Mantovani employs his pianistic skills to perfection and is exceptionally adept at shifting musically from one character to another. His sophisticated technique in agogics, particularly in dynamic changes, and his masterful ability to elicit a wide variety of timbres from the instrument are compelling features of this interpretation. In the Davidsbündlertänze, too, the pianist proves himself to be a sensitive and highly skilled interpreter who has not only internalised Schumann, but truly understood him.
This recording is also highly recommended and should be recommended to interested Schumannians, even – or especially – if they have already heard the two piano works many times before.
